Boxes, Drawers, or More?
When you first start collecting scarves, the question of storage feels like a problem for the future. You have one, maybe two, and they live happily in their original boxes. But fast-forward a few years (and a few too many “just this one” purchases), and now all of the sudden the stacks of orange boxes are multiplying. It’s not a bad problem to have, but that’s about when it hit me (not the boxes): scarf storage isn’t just an afterthought, it’s a system. And the system you choose can mean the difference between wearing what you love or forgetting half your collection exists.
It’s taken me years, a lot of trial and error, and more time than I’d like to admit rearranging stacks to finally land on a setup that actually works. Since I frequently receive questions about how I organize my collection, I thought I’d share everything I’ve tried, what worked, what definitely didn’t, and the solution I love now. We will go through my early box phase to my current drawer system, plus a perfect middle-ground option if you’re short on space.
My first attempt was, of course, the Hermès boxes themselves. Chic, right? Orange towers lined up. Some were mini tables others were arranged a little more editorially. And for a while, it did look organized, but I realized I was spending more time shuffling boxes than actually wearing scarves. Every time I wanted one, it was like scarf box Jenga. I was lifting three, then setting aside two and rebalancing the whole stack. And then of course, reversing the process just to put it all back. I eventually started hanging little tags on the outside of each box, which made it easier to know which scarf was inside, but it still didn’t solve the core problem. The task of digging through and moving them around ate up time and when you’re trying to make it out the door, it’s just too much.
That’s when I finally decided to move on from boxes and look for a system where I could actually see my collection. This is when I implemented drawers and it made a world of difference. Being able to open a drawer and spot the exact scarf I wanted changed everything. I’ll walk you through the way I used to handle boxes, the drawer setup I have now (plus how I hacked it), and then a great in-between option if you don’t want to commit to a closet overhaul.
