There’s a certain category of Hermès item that lives just outside the main collections.
Not part of the official scarf launches, not available for purchase, and yet sought-after by collectors: the knotting cards.
First introduced with Deck No. 1 (unnumbered), these small boxed sets feature a series of scarf-tying ideas, each shown with a styled photo and a simple tutorial on the back. Over the years, Hermès has periodically released new decks, and while they’re not produced every season, they’ve built a bit of a cult following among scarf collectors. Part practical reference, part collectible ephemera, they’re one of those little extras that Hermès does so well.
This year, for the first time in quite a while, a new edition arrived: Deck No. 7. I was curious to see which scarves would be featured and somewhat surprised to find that many of the designs aren’t from the current season, but from several seasons back. Personally, I love that choice. It reflects exactly what makes Hermès scarves so special. They aren’t trend-driven pieces with an expiration date. A scarf from five or ten years ago is just as relevant today, and the knotting cards reinforce that timelessness.
So let’s look through some of my favorite cards from the newest deck and as always, I’ll be identifying the scarves featured along the way.
